The lack of anger not of passion

As most of you are aware I am as big a Leeds fan as they come, but for some reason the start of this season has seemed different to me, I am not as angry as I used to be when we lose, I still get annoyed about it but I seem to have lost my very angry touch, I realise it seems like a good thing but I am not sure it is.


I thought it might have something to do with the fact that I can't listen to the games anymore, I work loads of Saturdays and have not quite found the £'s to buy LUTV for some reason, I guess mortgage, golf and saving for a trip to Leeds is more important at the moment. But in recent days I have realised that the lack of hearing/seeing Leeds games is not the reason I don't get angry like I used to, the reason is that I expected us to do exactly like we are so far, maybe we have actually managed to gain a few more points then I had thought.

I feel we have one of the most overrated squards in years and I am, pleasantly, surprised we have managed to get as many points as we have, I think we do have a few players who could make a real difference in our team (with better teammates) and then we have some that are utter useless and a few who seems to be more interested in being on twitter and making sure that who ever says anything bad about the team is named and shamed. 

I will always be passionate about Leeds United and I will always express my opinion so while this piece might not be the most popular I have ever done, I still think I am entitled to my opinion, anyways, lets hope the team throw a few more susprises and give us a season to remember.

Leeds fans and the excessive use of the word legend

Leeds fans are a passionate bunch and that's one of the things I like most in us, but sometimes some fans just get a bit carried away.

The last weeks have seen Ross McCormack heavily linked with Middlesbrough and this have made Twitter into a very strange place, people are tweeting the owners threatening to stop coming to ER if Ross is sold and demanding that David Haigh instantly gives Ross a new deal, a few things is wrong with that, first he'd be a pretty shitty businessman if he conducted his business on Twitter or took advice from any of us on there and two why say you'd not come to ER if Ross leaves, is he the one player to EVER be bigger then the shirt? Surely not.

Of other Twitter highlights there have been people stating they'd cry for weeks if Ross left and the classic "He's a Leeds United legend", fuck me.. We have fallen very very far if a player after 2½ years of Championship football s considered a Leeds legend, but I've realised in my two years on Twitter that it seems a Leeds legend is an easy thing to become in some fans eyes, for me there's only a few though and the latest one I'd consider calling a Leeds legend is Lucas Radebe. To call a player from our last seven or eight years a legend is, in my eyes, laughable, we might have had a few heroes in those years, Andy Hughes, David Prutton, Snoddy and Becchio, but legends no, not in my eyes.

Furthermore if Ross is sold, I think he'll go because Brian McDermott has a plan and another signing or two lined up, so I don't fear for the future even if "Leeds legend" Ross McCormack should leave the club.

The future is bright, the future is white.

Aidy, what are we going to do with you?

You might not believe me when I tell you this story, but a few years back in our 2009/10 promotion season I saw Aidy White play the game of his life against Oldham, a game in which he was given a standing ovation by the 17000 fans at ER that night.

I haven't really seen Aidy since then, he's been below average and that's being kind, he shows small glimpses of quality, his goal against Everton in last years Carling Cup being one, but apart from that I'll admit I've been left bitterly disappointed by him in recent years. After we fought so hard to keep hold of him last summer I suspected that NW or someone at Leeds had seen something in him that would suggest that he would be able to hold down a regular 1st team spot at the club, but no..

Aidy was in and out of the team last year and I doubt he'll feature much this season. Actually I kind of wish we had let him go last summer, I'm sure we can all agree that the link between him and Arsenal was a joke or something, but the link with Derby seemed real enough and I wish that it was them wasting their wage budget on him and not us.

One of Aidy's biggest problems (apart from being a very average footballer) is that we don't really know what his best position is, he's played both LB, LW and even RW in Leeds and none of them seem to fit him 100 % so what do we do?
If the interest from Blackpool is true and if they're really willing to pay between 250k-500k for him, I say; let him go. It hurts to see a academy player leave Leeds, but I can't see us ever getting anything out of Aidy White that we can't get out of 95% of our players.

My predictions for the coming season

So we are just a few days away from Brian McDermott first full season in charge of Leeds United and I think we are all pretty excited about getting the season startet and about seeing what McDermott can do for us.

I think all Leeds fans had hoped that GFH Capital would back McDermott big time so we could have signed six or seven quality players, but we have again been disappointed with regards to transfers, in other areas they have done very good things for the club, getting rid of Bates and his buddies and closing Yorkshire Radio, a station that constantly lost money.

But back to the transfers, McDermott managed to get highly rated Crewe midfielder Luke Murphy to join Leeds despite loads of interests from other good teams, Luke was our first £1M signing since we picked up Richard Cresswell in 2005, and he also got Matt Smith to join, his name might ring a bell for Liverpool and Everton fans after he scored goals against both in last seasons FA Cup. His last signing was his former Reading player Noel Hunt, a guy who always gives 100 % and then some. He also got rid of Warnock's biggest mistake, Steve Morison - worst signing in recent Leeds history. So he's has done well in the market with the limitations that was set up for him I think.

Pre-season was hard to judge much from but I feel confident that we will have a better season then last year (not saying much to be hinest), and with a good signing or two my prediction might even change to us going into the playoffs.

Young player of the year: Dominic Poleon

We should sell someone...

I did this piece a few weeks ago, http://aroundmyleedsunited.blogspot.dk/2013/07/spirits-are-high-at-leeds-united.html and as per usual when I become positive about Leeds nothing good comes of it and by now it seems painfully obvious that we're once again looking into the loan market or playing with the average side that we currently have.

It seems that we have to move players before we can get in the 4th or 5th signing that Brian McDermott sees as crucial to his team, but how on earth are we supposed to sell players like Pugh, Brown, Norris or Tonge, they have been given too good deals at Leeds for other teams to want to look at them and let's be honest, they are also kind of shit. So what do we do, we have to put someone in the shop window that could generate some interest, and I'd prefer that player to be El-Hadji Diouf, I think he went from great player to below average after he got his permanent deal last year, and he's not one I can see playing 35-40 games next year, at least not as a starter.

I know Diouf is a popular figure with fans and I do like him too, but we need to try and sell someone that might actually end up getting sold, and I think that most fans would agree with me that we will do better without Diouf then without McCormack, Lees or Byram (the other players that might generate some interest).

I'll gladly let David Haigh use my idea of a 2 for 1 sale.. Buy Diouf and get Pugh, Brown, Tonge or Norris FOR FREE!!

Spirits are high at Leeds United

As always I feel really positive before the new season begins, but it seems that this year I am not alone in feeling that, the group of players Brian McDermott have chosen to lead his charge on the league seem to be getting on really well together, both on the social network Twitter and, more importantly, on the pitch and in training.

New signing Noel Hunt made sure we all knew they were working hard and that it was not just about Twitter banter on his account (https://twitter.com/boyhunt) and I think everyone supporting Leeds knows that these guys are ready to fight very hard to bring us every success in the coming season.

New manager Brian McDermott also continues to make himself somewhat of cult hero with the fans, most recently after handing over 50 Euros to the supporters after they sang; "It's your round Brian" - I think that's class and really proves that he wants us all to be in this together. I also liked his quote of; "We're Leeds United, we have to win games", that could prove a popular song with the supporters during the season.

So I think that all Leeds fans can look forward to an exciting season with a bunch of players who will fight 100 % for the shirt and a manager who genuinely cares about the club and us as supporters.

 

Transfer window approaching

The summer transfer window is opening on July 1st and after some horrible windows we are finally ready to set off and claim our place back in the Premier League with some class signings, GFH Capital promised they would spend some money and said that we should reserve judgement on them until the summer window was over, OH MY, are they in for a treat, if Leeds fans are good at anything it's at judging, so for Haigh and his buddies sake I really hope they deliever what they have promised us since the day they took over basically.

It might sound negative saying that Leeds fans are good at judging, but I actually feel it's fair enough that we do, we have had almost ten years of pain and lies, we deserve better then this and we especially deserve the truth after GFH came in with big words and promises of listening and involving the fans.

I know the window is yet to open but I still feel a bit concerned about the promised transfers, whenever I see us linked with a player that will cost us £1M and above reports are quickly out that we are looking at the possibility of a season long loan instead or that we are ruled out of the biding before it even starts. I am not sure how I'd feel about another summer of broken promises and loans or signings of the quality like Habibou and Ryan Hall, or well I actually do know how I'd feel, I'd feel pissed off and lied to. The only positive there is to say about shit loan signings like Habibou is that we had the chance to return him to Belgium.

I have been considering whether it is all a smokescreen from GFH that we seem to be ruled out of any targets before even starting the window, they might just be cautious not to push the prices up before we put in bids, knowing that we are Leeds United, and if we want a player you can squeeze the prices up a bit.

Regardless of what happens I hope for some positive news while I'm on my holiday and I hope that GFH delievers, because like I wrote, judgement on them is coming to a town near you on August 1st.

The best ever Leeds United shirt

About a year ago my mailman rang my door and I went downstairs and opened it, there it was, ok it was wrapped so I could not actually see it, but I knew it was in there... I went upstairs and opened the package, and as expected, the best, Leeds United related, ebay purchase EVER. A slightly worn original Asics Thistle Hotels shirt as worn by legends like McAllister, Speed, Deane and Strachan.
I was well happy with the purchase, which was actually pretty cheap (£16 I think) and I wear it as often as I can, no event is to small to show of a true Leeds classic.

Footballing wise we have without a doubt celebrated more succes in other shirts, but I just like this so much, the collar, the color, the stripe, the logo - it just has it all - actually all the Thistle Hotels shirts (perhaps not the goalie ones though), were awesome and I have almost managed to get them all, just lacking the green/blue one but I'll probably get hold of that someday to.

After years with Diadora and Macron I always like to think back the days we wore Nike, Asics and Umbro, true sporting brands and not this cheap crap we wear now, one of my biggest hopes is that we will return to a decent brand the year we are promoted, which means 2014/15 (I wish).

Jermaine Beckford, a return or a player best left in the past?

A rumour surfaced today that Leicester would either release or transfer list Jermaine Beckford, and instantly Twitter exploded with people either wanting Leeds to sign him up or people doing their best to persuade Leeds to leave Beckford alone.
I'm a bit torn to be honest, the guy can score goals, plenty of goals when he's in the right mood, he can also be a lazy bugger that complaints and moans most of the time, and the "fun" part is, you never know which Jermaine you'll see.

Beckford will always be a hero to Leeds fans for his goal against Manchester United on January 3rd 2010 and for him scoring the goal that finally got us out of League One on a wonderful day in May 2010 - but if I'm honest I think we should let Beckford sign for someone else, I just can't see him being a 20-25 goalscorer in the championship, plus the whole taking players back who asked to leave is not really always the best idea, I fear he'd return with an attitude of him being bigger then Leeds since he's been in the Premier League and we haven't.

So, the verdict will have to be; Thanks for the memories Becks but our paths should probably not cross again, for the good of Leeds United and probably for you to... So Brian McDermott, please sign Billy Sharp!

Sign him up Brian!

Reports came out today that Aston Villa have decided to release former Leeds loanee Eric Lichaj when his contract expires next month. I remember Lichaj fondly from his time at Elland Road and would like to see him join the club in the summer.

Not only is he a good RB, he also has a killer last name, that's gotta count for something to right? He's also played quite a lot of Premier League games for Aston Villa since his Leeds days, so I think that us signing up Lichaj would show a bit of ambition - Whether Sam Byram leaves or not I still think Lichaj will be an important player at ER. Sam can be pushed forward, or maybe we could even allow the 19 year old a few rests during the season, luxury!

So Brian, get on the phone to Eric's agent and sign him up.

Player of the year 2012/13

It's time for the final award of the easily forgetable 2012/13 season - and this time it's the big one, player of the year.

As every other Leeds fan I've been very impressed by Sam Byram and also gave him the young player award (http://aroundmyleedsunited.blogspot.dk/2013/05/young-player-of-year.html) but for me there is only one guy who deserves player of the year, and he deserves it for several reasons.

• I'm confident that without his many goals prior to his sale we'd be playing League One come August
• I think everybody will agree that our promotion hopes, slim as they were, totally vanished when he left
• We've all, almost, realised what a class goalscorer we had after seeing his replacement being worse then Billy Paynter

The sale of Becchio ruined our season, and if I disliked Warnock before the sale for his idiotic comments about Becchio, it doesn't compare to my hate towards him now, not only did he sell our top scorer (and top 10 of all time), he also "managed" to do it in a crap deal and get Morison and very little £'s for him, crazy stuff.

A well deserved player of the year in my humble opinion, now it's time for us to look forward to the new season and hopefully better times ahead, thanks for reading during the season - best fans in the world!

Young player of the year

It's time for young player of the year and it's pretty obvious that it can only be Sam Byram. I'm not sure how many Leeds fans knew who this kid was 12 months ago, but I'm pretty confident that every Leeds fan knows him now.

Sam has had an amazing season, he's played in every game but that last two and have been one of our best and most consistent performers, it's very clear that we have a wonderful player on our hands, whether he is still here after the summer transfer window we'll see, but I really hope so, this guy is, in my humble opinion, a future Leeds captain.

So, young Sam, thanks for a great season, it's safe to say that apart for TOMA and Warnock fucking off you been one of the only highlights!

Game of the year 2012/13

It's time for the second award of the season and this time it game of the year, this game had it all, a new start after Warnock, a win, safety from promotion and a very unlikely hero.

The game I'm talking about is our home game against the Owls from Sheffield, a local derby with extra attention on it due to a supposed Leeds fan running onto the pitch at Hillsborough and hitting Owls keeper Kirkland and the game was also a early kick off for perhaps the same reason.

A few of the Danish Whites were present at Elland Road and the texts I got at half time were not to positive as we were down 0-1. In a few minutes in the second half Luke Varney suddenly decided to score two great goals and give Leeds a lead, and allthough the final 25 minutes were very hard to get through we did it! A win for Leeds and a win for new manager Brian McDermott, but most of all a win for the great fans who had endured so much agony during the season, I'll admit that the tension was so hard on me that I actually shed a tear at FT, I guess thats just how much passion I have for our club.

Congrats to Luke Varney, this will probably be the first and last time you're mentioned in one of my award blogs.

Goal of the year 2012/13

It's been a forgettable season for Leeds United, the highs have been few and far between so my awards for Player of the year, Young player of the year, Goal of the year and match of the year have been quite easy, I hope to have a harder time finding them next season.

I'll start out with Goal of the year, and could it be anything else then the Argentine Becchios goal against Chelsea? No it could not.

The goal had it all, great play from defence to attack and a clinical finish as we knew and loved from Becchio, furthermore it gave us belief that we'd actually beat Chelsea out of the cup, if only for 30 mins, all in all a great goal and a nice memory to have.. Who knows when we'll be able to meet/beat Chelsea again?

The goal also came just a few days before the, supposed, GFH Capital revolution was to begin at ER, well, we're still waiting but enough about that.

Congrats Luciano on your last goal of the season for Leeds.

So Neil Warnock finally left Leeds United, I know he will disagree when he reads this (and he will..) but I actually think he's left us in a worse state then he got us. He managed to sell some the decent players around, Snoddy, Becchio & Clayton and replaced them with "working men" like Austin, Varney, Green & Diouf - Not impressive.

And for a team of "workers" I don't think I've ever seen so little passion, so something was wrong, the passion that Warnock had in Sheffield United was dead and never arrieved with him at Elland Road. And his man management have been a complete joke, the whole blame game he plays week in week out is something you see in kindergarden, not something you should see a man with so many years in the game do.

His post game interviews have been somewhat comical and has made him the laughing stock among Leeds fans on Twitter, not once have I heard him take any blame for results or/and awful play, and not once has he blamed one of "his" boys (Kenny, Pearce, Pelts, Brown, Varney etc.) but the players he inherited from Grayson have been given loads of stick, the likes of McCormack and Lees must feel happy today knowing that they'll never have to deal with him again, hell Tom Lees might even crack a wee smile!

So even if I think it's three-four months to late I'd still like to applaud that he's out of the club, now all we need is a "New Shirt, New Start, Part Deux"

Colin Wanker, have a nice life down south, don't ever come back to ER and thanks for NOTHING!

So, what is going on exactly?

We are now a few months into the GFH Capital ownership of Leeds United, and we know as much as we did under Bates, if Bates' regime was like North Korea, I guess GFH's is like Iraq under Saddam.

We're told nothing and it seems like Salem Patel and David Haigh are going thier own ways and are not really sure on what they're doing or of what GFH want to do with the club.  Rumuors surfaced a few weeks ago that the club was back up for sale, but again, we haven't been told anything. Then the media said that a guy was close to buying the club, but again, we're not really told anything.

I'm getting sick of it to be honest, our club is a laughing stock, thank god for Blackburn being more of a joke - I don't need a billionaire buying Leeds and us "buying" a promotion and later a title like Man City have, but I demand stability and some sort of ambition now, not more lies and propaganda placed in the media from owners, manager or whoever feel they want to defend the owners actions.

Get new owners in, find a proper young manager, give youth a chance and lets see where that takes us - we, the fans, really as the banner say don't deserve this shit anymore. I want openness and clarity from the club and a proper plan of their ambitions, if the ambition is to stay in the championsship, fine, but let us know, no more of this, "this is our year" shit, we're starting to sound like Liverpool.

So Haigh and Patel, sell up and leave and please make sure you take Ken Bates with you out the door, just drop him out of the airplane somewhere around Monaco on your way back to Dubai or whereever you want to go!

Leeds United and the Norwich obsession

When I first became a Leeds fan back in the early 90’s the games I looked forward to and was told about were the games against the likes of Manchester United, Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea. Games with a history, games that meant everything, to fans of both Leeds and our opponents. 

Leeds United and the fall from grace is a well known story and games between us and the teams we compared ourselves to became few and far between, which also meant that the rivalries died out a bit, however I do believe that the clubs mentioned miss us in the Premier League, I base this on the fact that whoever they play they waste no time in singing: “We all hate Leeds scum”, apparently that is the only thing the “big clubs” can agree on, they hate us – but don’t worry, the feeling is mutual.

Until I joined Twitter I actually still thought of those clubs as our big rivals and as the clubs we aspired to be, but it seems that quite a few people on Twitter think that out rivals these days are Norwich, Wigan, Huddersfield and Millwall? I can live with Huddersfield as they’re a local rival and also with Millwall because they’re a sick bunch, but really fellow Leeds fans, Wigan? Norwich?

I realise that Norwich in recent years have managed to get quite a few of our better players and that Wigan are in the Premier League for 8^th year running, but still, to see them as our biggest rivals and have more focus on them and their games (or any other games then Leeds for that matter) is just pathetic in my opinion. That I can see Norwich's starting 11 and a swipe at Becchio, Howson, Snoddy or Bradley Johnson written or retwettet before I see anything about Leeds seems wrong to me, we're all quick enough to make fun of other fans who are more concerned by other teams then their own but it should go both ways I think.

For me Leeds are as big a club as Liverpool or Manchester United, we’ve just suffered a massive fall, but that’s no reason to change rivals and creating rivalries with the so called “tin pot clubs”, if anything that just makes us a “tin pot club” ourselves.  

If you look at Twitter Leeds/MOT/any Leeds player and other Leeds related stuff is trending almost every week, so why do we lower ourselves and compare us to small teams? If anything we should keep the “original” rivalries going so the “big teams” are prepared for us when we return, our fans are among the best in the country which we’ve proven time and time again when playing either Manchester United, Arsenal, Spurs, Manchester City or however in the cups – So let’s leave this weird “Norwich obsession” behind and focus on Leeds United and our march back towards the top of English football.

New manager.. but when and who?

We all seem sure that a new manager is to be installed at ER sooner or later; even Warnock himself looks resigned to losing his job, whether it’s this week, next month or in the summer no one knows.

There seems to be three candidates that are primarily mentioned, Nigel Adkins, Gus Poyet & Paolo Di Canio. The thing they have in common is that they all play or at least would like to play the kind of football the fans at ER want, quick passing on the floor football, very much unlike the “hoofball” that Warnock shows us week in, week out.

My preferred choice, or rather the only of the three I’d ever like to see managing my club is Nigel Adkins, he’s proven at both out current level and was, in my opinion, on his way to keeping Southampton in the premiership before he, strangely enough, was sacked. He has back to back promotions with Southampton and proved that he didn’t need billions of £’s to get a good team together. He will need financial backing in Leeds as there are many areas that need strengthening, but I think that no matter who comes in he’ll need to be backed, not even Guardiola or Morten Olsen could get promoted with our current team.

The second guy mentioned is former Leeds assistant Gus Poyet, a guy who I never understood why people are so desperate to get back, what exactly was it he achieved at Leeds? All I remember was him and Wise managing to get a pretty good Leeds team relegated and then him fucking off when London called for him, not to be a manager or an assistant, but to be a translator for Juande Ramos, a complete joke.

One of my fondest ER memories include Poyet however, I was sat close to the visitors’ dugout when we played Brighton in Feb 2010, and some guy behind me started shouthing; “Poyet, Poyet!!” When Gus turned around the guy screamed; “You f****** Chelsea reject” haha now that was fun! And by far the best thing I remember Poyet for. Poyet has managed to get a League One promotion and then not much else, he’s keeping Brighton in the Championsship and it’s only fair to say they’re doing quite well, but I think that with the money he’s spending he should be able to do better than he is.

The last guy who has been mentioned, more and more since he left Swindon yesterday is Paolo Di Canio. They say you should never mix sports and politics and that is very much true in this case, I can’t bare to see a dedicated facist manage my favorite football team, I really can’t, I’d hate every second of that. I know there was published a article a few days ago where Di Canio spoke among other things about politics, but it won’t change my view on him though (Article is here: http://www.independent.co.uk/news/people/profiles/paolo-di-canio-my-life-speaks-for-me-6273526.html).

But like I said, don’t mix sports and politics so now I’ll tell why I don’t want him from a footballing perspective.  

Every manager needs to start somewhere but I can’t really see how a manager with experience from League 1&2 can step up and manage a club like Leeds United, with the massive expectations and constant pressure from fans and media. We need a guy who has been through it all, much like Neil Warnock, but safe to say that this marriage is a bit unhappy only 12 months in. Di Canio is known to be controversial; I can only see him and Leeds United end in tears, probably during a fight with Diouf, fans or something like that.

I’ll be the first to admit that I might be colored by his personality when I judge him, but either way I really can’t see him take the step up from Swindon to Leeds.

So dear GFH Capital, get Adkins in, show ambition and show the fans what your plans with Leeds United are, we’re all more than happy to give you another year before you deliever a promotion, but I think most people would like to know what you intentions are and how you see the future of OUR club.

Oh, and this picture should say more than a thousand words on why Di Canio is all sorts of wrong for us (or for anyone imo).

T.O.M.A part deux

It was a wonderful feeling when GFH Capital announced that they had managed to get Ken Bates out of Leeds United, a little less wonderful when we learned that Ken Bates was to be installed as President after the 2012/13 season, but still nice for us all to know that almost 8 years of Bates was over.

When the takeover was completed I did this blog; http://kimba1980.blogspot.dk/2012/11/toma-is-no-more.html and most of the questions I raised in that is yet to be answered by GFH led by David Haigh & Salem Patel.

But last night there was a new twist to the lovely saga of Leeds United takeovers, just seven weeks after they had bought the club, BBC Leeds could tell us all that we might be in for another annoying takeover saga.

GFH were quick to make a statement on leedsunited.com that no offers had been accepted and continued the statement by saying some stuff about what they had done so far, seemed a bit strange in my opinion. What I had preferred for GFH to say was that the offer had been REJECTED, to write not accepted gives me a vibe that they're saying to the supposed interested parties; Come back with a better offer and we might just listen. I realise that GFH are a bank and that Leeds United is an investment, I had just never thought we had to go through another takeover already, it seems that only Leeds United could be sold twice in a season.

I remember that Ken Bates said that GFH were the right guys for Leeds United and the future of the club, I have long suspected that GFH were the only ones who were willing to name him President and that that was the reason he sold to them. Thats the positive about potential new owners I suppose, they don't have to make Ken Bates President of LUFC, so if someone new comes in we can all pray that this means Ken finally f**** off for good.
